Cambodia - Angkor Temples 25 images Created 6 Dec 2012
This collection includes various temples in Cambodia, especially those in the Angkor Archaeological Park north of Siem Reap. The temples popular with visitors are in their own collections: for example, images of Ta Prohm Temple - the temple that featured in the movie "Tomb Raider" - are in the "Cambodia - Ta Prohm Temple" collection.
There are many Angkor temple images on the internet that are incorrectly identified, often just as 'Angkor Wat'. So, to clarify, Angkor Wat is one temple, the largest, in the Angkor Archaeological Park. This should not be confused with the nearby ancient walled city of Angkor Thom, with its five gates topped with face towers.
At the centre of Angkor Thom is the Bayon Temple, famous for its many face towers. Images elsewhere of face towers, labelled as 'Angkor Wat', are incorrect. There are no face towers at Angkor Wat. Other temples with face towers, usually at their main entry gates, are Ta Prohm, Banteay Kdei, and Ta Som.
Images elsewhere of tree roots growing over ruins, labelled as 'Angkor Wat', are also incorrect. There are no trees growing over the stonework of Angkor Wat. Temples with tree roots growing over stonework can be found at Ta Prohm, Banteay Kdei, Preah Khan, and Ta Som. All of the temples in these collections are correctly identified.
